Lumexis Corporation evolved from a novel idea of Dr. Gregory C. Petrisor - utilizing optical fiber as the sole carrier of data for aircraft In-Flight Entertainment. Because of its immense bandwidth and light weight, he reasoned that optical fiber could significantly enlarge entertainment quality and offerings. In 2003, with a small amount of venture capital backing, he enlisted the help of two widely recognized IFE veterans, Doug Cline and Rich Salter, in forming a company to begin exploring interest among airlines. While highly skeptical that there was a real need for an additional IFE supplier in a narrow market already well served by three major manufacturers, Cline and Salter well understood the need for major reduction in the high costs of acquisition and ownership of existing conventional products. Together the three began a lengthy campaign to win greater financial backing and find an airline willing to take a risk on promising new technology. Over three additional years, they evolved a uniquely capable system architecture and traveled around the world to demonstrate a prototype to many of the world’s major airlines. A major airline's commitment to become Lumexis’s launch customer quickly led to expanded investor funding of accelerated system development and expansion of management team to include a VP of Operations, Lou Sharkey and Director of Program Management, Jack Sunabe. On February 19th, 2007, this small cadre opened Lumexis’s first offices immediately west of John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. Here they initiated the final design of the FTTS™ IFE system, slowly building a highly select team of experienced IFE professionals to assure the highest standards of quality in engineering design, production and service.
